MEDIA ADVISORY: Desmond Tutu and Mary Robinson of the Elders join the Ford Foundation and NoVo Foundation to Announce Initiative to End Child Marriage at the Clinton Global Initiative

September 19, 2011

Calling child marriage “a violation of the rights of girls and women, and a major development challenge,” members of the Clinton Global Initiative seek to end the practice.

New York, NY – Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa will join former Irish President, Mary Robinson; Luis A. Ubiñas, president of the Ford Foundation; and Jennifer Buffett, president and co-chair of the NoVo Foundation to announce an important new initiative to end child marriage and protect the rights of girls at a press conference during the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI).

Child marriage affects millions of children every year, predominantly girls. In the developing world, one in three girls is married before age 18, usually marking an end to their schooling and exposing them to higher risk of injury and death due to early sexual activity and childbirth. CGI members this year helped to createGirls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage, which will bring together organizations worldwide working to end child marriage.
